Job Description

This role is a new and exciting opportunity and would suit an individual who has previous experience as a LSA or someone with recent experience of studying who has a passion for education and young people. Your job will be to motivate and encourage students who are struggling academically. You will need to help students organise their time and give practical guidance on how to break down tasks and prepare for exams. Your literacy must be at a high standard as you will need to support students with academic reading and writing. All of our students are studying A Levels or Level 3 BTECs and around 80% will progress to university.
This role will give you a real opportunity to be a catalyst for social change, helping disadvantaged students reach university or other aspirational destinations.

Required Skills

- To motivate and encourage students who may be struggling academically to reach their potential.

- To help students organise their time, find resources, understand tasks, solve problems and suggest different approaches to carrying out tasks.

- To liaise with subject teachers regarding independent study skills required and how to support the development of these skills.

- To supervise timetabled study periods and establish a consistent culture of focused study through monitoring, intervention and praise as required.

- To liaise closely with the Student Services Teams teams, both curriculum and pastoral, to ensure the maximum effectiveness of the supervised study periods

- To help students organize their time and give practical advice in preparing for their assessments and exams.

- To provide effective academic support, and mentoring to enable students to achieve their full potential.

- To attend student progress meetings, and meet regularly with the Directors of Curriculum to discuss individual student guidance and support issues and concerns relating to attendance, progress or engagement to ensure that students ultimately succeed.

- To support students in a successful transition to college life, helping them to stay on track to achieve their vision.

- Keep accurate attendance records for study support sessions and work completed

- To contact students/parents/carers in the event of non-attendance to study support sessions.

- Undertake necessary professional development so that you are able to:

○ Understand the UCAS process and the impact of student grades on their next steps students may be able to access .

○ Promote strategies on building resilience and coping with setbacks.

○ Promote motivational strategies to address student low level anxiety

○ Understand that low mood can affect young people and promote strategies to combat this.

○ Understand the contexts of our most vulnerable and disadvantaged students and support them with compassion to achieve.


General - as part of the Student Services team

- To support the work of the wider Student Services Team.

- To support student events and trips that enhance students' progression opportunities.

- To participate in appropriate college activities, which include welcome evenings, open evenings, parent evenings, enrolment and induction.

- To refer students, where appropriate, to additional learning and specialist support.

- To be involved in school liaison and in interviewing prospective students.

- To attend all meetings and training specific to mentoring.

- To develop own expertise that will benefit the whole pastoral/student support team.

- To attend any necessary training and/or development as the role demands.

- To provide supervision in communal student areas as directed

- To support the Safeguarding and wider pastoral team as directed when the need arises
